Books - The Dutch "TITANIC" the second STATENDAM sunken as JUSTICIA

The "Dutch TITANIC", laid down 1912 as STATENDAM, seized by the British Royal Navy to become the trooper JUSTICIA. A new book by historian Tamás Balogh is the first compendium about that liner, that never saw civil service, and was lost during WWI.
While TITANIC is ostentatiously called the most luxurious liner, STATENDAM offered luxury features that recalled the grandness of lounges and luxuries of the German Ballin trio - e.g. a Main Lounge two decks high, between the first and second funnel, a two deck high Dining Room, as well a Wintergarden of one and a half deck hight. OLYMPIC Class only offered one deck high salons ...

The first STATENDAM (10,322 GT) was constructed and inaugurated in 1898 and had been sold to ALLAN LINE in 1911.
When STATENDAM II was laid down in Belfast at HARLAND & WOLFF the Dutch liner was the nineth largest liner in the world with 32,234 GT (IMPERATOR laid down 1910 - 52,117 GT, AQUITANIA laid down 1910 - 45,647 GT, LUSITAN…

Review by Julie Ring Keller: "My husband and I have been on a couple of dozen cruises on a total of 12 lines. This CRYSTAL cruise was outstanding in every way. In most ways it was comparable to less expensive cruises such as OCEANIA and AZAMARA, though the enrichment activities were far and away the best we've ever experiences. The cusine was top rate, though the specialty restaurants were, in my view, no better than the main dining room. Even top shelf liquor brands were included in the price, and service was impeccable. Gratuities and internet also were included in the price, so the high ticket was not as bad as it seemed. The ship, while beautiful, was a bit dated (read the paragraph below), but was due to go into dry dock right after our cruise. With the exception of Lisbon, Madeira and Morocco, the island and ports were just so-so; but who cared? We would've been happy to never leave the ship!"

Start of 2017 CRYSTAL had already announced the conversion of CRYSTAL SYMPHONY, which cost € 20,000,000.00, in spring under the name "Evolution of CRYSTAL Luxury". This is the first direct intra-group order from LLOYD WERFT Bremerhaven and CRYSTAL CRUISES, both of which belong to the GENTING Group, Hong Kong.
CRYSTAL CRUISES is named the best luxury cruise company (`line´) by US NEWS. CRYSTAL SYMPHONY´s now max 848 guests onboard are served by now 566 engaged crew member. The crew considered to be the finest shipboard staff afloat. It is their goal to anticipate your every need and to make this a vacation to remember.
With this conversion CRYSTAL is the first luxury cruise company that is reducing its passenger capacity on board a ship, instead of squeezing in more passengers.
CRYSTAL still names not all accomodations "suites" but name them what they are "staterooms" a factthat other luxury and so called luxury companies ignore for their ships, to make them "greater" as they are. These staterooms (19m² and 23m²) are as well outfitted with the luxurious standard of CRYSTAL, as the suites and penthouses. Some of the suites but are still not real suites, but vast staterooms, but far better styled and equipped than other self proclaimed luxury companies do.
CRUISES CRUISES is an All-Inclusive offer:
Enjoy unlimited and free exquisite wines, cocktails, aperitifs, digestifs and even champagne on board. The minibar in your cabin is also refilled free of charge.
All tips on board are already included in your travel price.

CRYSTAL SYMPHONY - The Evolution of CRYSTAL Luxury
On September 23rd, the CRYSTAL SYMPHONY, built in Finland 1995, arrived in front of the large Kaiserdock II of the LLOYD WERFT shipyard. The luxury ship arrived September 23trd to remain in Bremerhaven until October 16th for a conversion costing several million euros. However, the order was split up: The interior fittings are carried out directly by CRYSTAL CRUISES or its partner companies. LLOYD WERFT is responsible for the shipbuilding activities and the entire logistical handling of this order. In addition to a large number of LLOYD WERFT employees, several hundred crew members and subcontractors had been working on the shipyard premises in the last few weeks.
In addition to the regular maintenance work for the ship's operation, the ship not only received two new restaurants with a current capacity for 922 passengers until 16 October, but also the technical prerequisites for free WLAN on board will be created. In addition, every cabin is equipped with ultra-thin 42-inch screens. Some of the smaller cabins on deck 9 are converted into luxurious penthouse suites with butler service. A total of 40 new suites with an area of between 34 and 45 square metres was built, reducing passenger capacity to 848 guests as a result of this conversion, CRYSTAL SERENITY, which has been in operation since 2003, is scheduled for a similar major overhaul in the autumn of 2018, although this work has not yet been put out to tender, but it could be LLOYD WERFT again.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Where life is absolutely worth living! Your port of embarkation, a coastal seaport city in Canada, located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. Vancover is a Beta global city. Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for livability and quality of life. Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics which were held in Vancouver and Whistler. The 19th century townsite was made the railhead of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), to take advantage of its large natural seaport to the Pacific Ocean. Vancover soon became a vital link in a trade route between the Orient / East Asia, Eastern Canada, and Europe. Vancouver is well known as an urban centre surrounded by nature, making tourism its second-large business. Major film production studios in Vancouver and nearby Burnaby have turned Greater Vancouver and nearby areas into one of the largest film production centres in North America, earning it the nickname, "Hollywood North".

Protected from the open sea by forested isles, sheltered from the windy mainland by the tallest coastal mountains in the world, this 1,000-mile waterway seems custom-made by nature for a cruise. The deep, calm waters of the passage meander between dense pine forests where wild game abounds, with occasional rustic towns along the way.

A fantastic journey past almost untouched nature. Every now and then you will be accompanied by dolphin families, whose fins reveal their presence. You will be surprised by the giants of the seas. Small water fountains will rise up from a distance ... again and again. From time to time these wonderful animals show you their beauty. Fins, like a wave, wave against you as if in greeting. It's humpback whales, one or two, three and more at once. Fantastic!

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan (ˈkɛɪkæn, KETCH-ih-kan) - (Tlingit: Kichx̱áan) is a city in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Alaska, United States, the southeasternmost city in Alaska.

Ketchikan is named after Ketchikan Creek, which flows through the town, emptying into the Tongass Narrows a short distance southeast of its downtown. "Ketchikan" comes from the Tlingit name for the creek, Kitschk-hin, the meaning of which is unclear. It may mean "the river belonging to Kitschk"; other accounts claim it means "Thundering Wings of an Eagle". Ketchikan Creek served as a summer fish camp for Tlingit natives for untold years before the town was established by Mike Martin in 1885. Naughty trivia: the area near the mouth of Ketchikan Creek later earned Ketchikan a measure of infamy during the first half of the 20th century for a red-light district known as Creek Street, with brothels aligned on either side of the creek. According to the U.S. Postal Service, one of Ketchikan's two zip codes, 99950, is the highest-numbered in the United States.

Ketchikan's economy is based upon government services, tourism and commercial fishing. Civic boosters have dubbed the community the "Salmon Capital of the World." The Misty Fiords National Monument is one of the area's major attractions, and the Tongass National Forest has long been headquartered in Ketchikan, mostly in the city's historic Federal Building. For most of the latter half of the 20th century, a large portion of Ketchikan's economy and life centered on the Ketchikan Pulp Company pulp mill in nearby Ward Cove. The mill closed in 1997 in the wake of the passage of the Tongass Timber Reform Act of 1990, which reduced timber harvest targets in the national forest.Ketchikan has the world's largest collection of standing totem poles, found throughout the city and at four major locations: Saxman Totem Park, Totem Bight State Park, Potlatch Park, and the Totem Heritage Center. Most of the totems at Saxman Totem Park and Totem Bight State Park are recarvings of older poles, a practice that began during the Roosevelt Administration through the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Totem Heritage Center displays preserved 19th-century poles rescued from abandoned village sites near Ketchikan.

Juneau, Alaska

The City and Borough of Juneau (ˈn JOO-noh; Tlingit: Dzánti K'ihéeni [ˈtsántʰì kʼìˈhíːnì]), commonly known as Juneau, is the capital city of Alaska. It is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan panhandle, and it is the second largest city in the United States by area.

Luxury Cruise - Destination Alaska - CRYSTAL CRUISES

The city is named after the Canadian gold prospector from Quebec, Joe Juneau. The original Tlingit name of the town is Dzántik'i Héeni ("Base of the Flounder’s River", dzánti ‘flounder’, –kʼi ‘base’, héen ‘river’), and Auke Bay just north of Juneau proper is called Áak'w ("Little lake", áa ‘lake’, -kʼ ‘diminutive’) in Tlingit. The Taku River, just south of Juneau, was named after the cold t'aakh wind, which occasionally blows down from the mountains. Long before white man arrived, the Auks, part of Tlingit, the Natives, had summer homes and harvested the area's rich natural resources.
Juneau is rather unusual among U.S. capitals (except Honolulu, Hawaii) in that there are no roads connecting the city to the rest of Alaska or to the rest of North America (although ferry service is available for cars). So, not really the location for a `road movie´. The absence of a road network is due to the extremely rugged terrain surrounding the city. This in turn makes Juneau a de facto island city in terms of transportation, since all goods coming in and out must go by plane or boat, in spite of the city being located on the Alaskan mainland. Downtown Juneau sits at sea level, with tides averaging 16 feet (5 m), below steep mountains about 3,500 feet (1,100 m) to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) high. Atop these mountains is the Juneau Icefield, a large ice mass from which about 30 glaciers flow; two of these, the Mendenhall Glacier and the Lemon Creek Glacier, are visible from the local road system. The global warming has its impact already, the Mendenhall Glacier, as the Lemon Creek Glacier, has been gradually retreating; its front face is declining both in width and height. It may be an interesting visit at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

Hoonah, Alaska

The Tlingit people gave Hoonah not only its name, which means “where the north wind doesn’t blow, - but also an interesting culture and history with roots going back hundreds of years. Today, carvings and totem sites, including the Huna Tribal House Carving Project in the middle of town, present local legends in fascinating color and detail. Located in Alaska’s panhandle 30 miles west of Juneau, Hoonah also offers an abundance of what this northerly clime is known for: scenery and wildlife.

Pick your statistic and chances are Hoonah holds top honors. For instance, a record 161 humpback whales were identified near Hoonah in 2007. The current record-holding coho salmon was reeled in at the nearby Icy Strait, and a 440-pound world-record halibut was also caught in these environs. As for the area’s four-footed creatures, Chichagof Island (on which Hoonah is situated) is home to the world’s largest brown bear population. No matter how you look at it, Hoonah is a rugged paradise not to be missed.

Skagway, Alaska

Discover the flavor of the gold rush era in Skagway. In its heyday, this atmospheric frontier town was the largest in Alaska. During the height of the gold boom, Skagway was known as the gateway to the goldfields at the Klondike River, and its population went from 2 to 10,000 in a single year. At one time it boasted 80 saloons and was known as the "roughest town on earth." Although its population is now less than 1,000, its rip-roaring past will come alive as you stroll along Broadway or browse through the Trail of '98 Museum's outstanding collection of memorabilia.
at sea Cruising Tracy Arm
You leave Sakagway and sail into the Gulf of Alaska to Glacier Bay National Park, only accessible by ship or airplane. You sail with CRYSTAL SYMPHONY close to the glaciers there. Breathtakingly beautiful!
You sail towards ice floes, in the distance, you hear a thunder - pieces of ice break off from the Gletcher and fall into the depths of the sea.
On ice floes, a Baldeagle and seagulls may float towards you and you think "I could write poems professionally".
Forty-five miles outside of Juneau, this scenic destination has it all — mammoth glaciers, towering granite walls, breathtaking mountains, waterfalls, and a large variety of wildlife. Tracy Arm is a 30-mile long fjord - a narrow inlet created by glacial activity - formed thousands of years ago. It winds its way past 7,000-foot snow-capped mountains and floating icebergs. At the end of the fjord lies the stunning Sawyer Glaciers, translucent blue mountains rising majestically out of the water. About once every hour, the North Sawyer and South Sawyer glaciers “calve” - an awe-inspiring phenomena in which large chunks of ice tumble into the sea below.

Tracy Arm is also home to a large variety of wildlife including bald eagles, brown bears, goats, and whales. It provides some wonderful opportunities for capturing beautiful vacation memories.

The saying "location, location, location" has perhaps never fit a place more perfectly than the small town of Whittier. Sitting on a railroad at the head of a fjord, Whittier offered an ideal strategic location for the military, which set up shop here in the 1940s to protect Alaska, while the outmost Aleutan Islands had been occupied by Japanese forces ... Today, Whittier's position makes it a perfect gateway for adventures on the pristine waters of Prince William Sound. Glaciers are plentiful, as are sea otters, salmon and orcas. When you are not gazing in wonder at rivers of ice and the creatures of the sea, you can ponder the beauty of the Sound's dramatic shoreline and surrounding rainforest.

In its heyday, when Sitka was the capital of the Russian province in the New World, it was referred to as the "Paris of the Pacific" and known for its great prosperity. the city was founded by Alexander Baranof in 1799. It wasn't until 1867, when Alaska was purchased by the United States, when Russia lost "its interest" in this part of the world. Russia was facing a bancrupcy after the lost Crimean war and needed money. Stars and Stripes replaced the Russian flag.
As Russia's former capital in the New World, Sitka still retains its exotic heritage, boasting proud architecture and unique historical sites.

First of all for us, the species of Homo Sapiens Sapiens (the modern man) - YES! It makes life easier, the way of life, the choice of a partner ... There are enough and sufficient and good investigations. And why else do we plunge into the fitness studios, why are the casting shows booming for super models (models are actually discovered in other ways), cosmetic surgery...?
But beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
Is appearance important? Especially the look of cruise ships?

Heritage - ORIENT EXPRESS living history

The living legend ORIENT EXPRESS ORIENT EXPRESS, its name alone is evoking dreams and longings. Immediately one is remembered  about Agathe Christie and her brilliant crime novel - `Murder on the ORIENT EXPRESS´ - and we see Hercule Poirot and the suspects. by Earl of Cruise

When in 1883 the first Express train of a new formed luxury train company, founded by its brainchild Georges Nagelmakers, Paris left for, at first Giugiu in Romania, left, Mr. Nagelmakers may have dreamed, that his luxury express train should become the synonym for luxury, comfort and speed. And indeed the ORIENT EXPRESS turned into the Queen of Trains - often copied, but never outdone in its fame. Alone the destination, the Orient, was a place of longing and dreams. And that very train fulfilled those dreams within a short time. No longer weeks to go down to Istanbul, and into the Ottoman Empire, but days - the continent grew closer, became smaller.

ss NORMANDIE 1935 - 1942 IX

ss / te NORMANDIE starting from cold Owners: COMPAGNIE GÉNÉRALE TRANSATLANTIQUE BUILDERS: PENHÖET, St. Nazaire, France by Stephen Carey ©, editing by Earl of Cruise This document is almost exclusively about the engineering aspects of NORMANDIE, mainly on how to start her up from cold. If you are looking for photos of the passenger spaces, there is a plethora of them on the web, in Facebook groups - Admirers of the ss Normandie, ss Normandie photographic file, The French Ocean Liners / Les Paquebots Français, ss Normandie, GREAT LINERS OF THE PAST & PRESENT, and others, Pinterest and in articles about NORMANDIE here in the blog, please see at the end of the article. Using "ss" for NORMANDIE is quite incorrect, as NORMANDIE was a Turbo Electric vessel and not a steamship, therefore NORMANDIE should be adressed as "te". by Earl of Cruise
