The majority takeover of the French shipyard STX FRANCE by the Italian shipyard company FINCANTIERI has broken down for the time being. As several news agencies report, the shipyard is instead nationalized.
In my view a step saving empolyment and workers rights, as well securing French naval interests. STX FRANCE is last remaining French shipbuilder of a certain quantity. Another reason for the drastic move may be the crucial fiscal situation of France in itself, and the threat when Macron is failing, we all have to deal eventually with the irratic political sorcière Le Pen. Further the sale of ALSTOM´s energy branch to GENERAL ELECTRIC as foreign investor is not well regarded in France. Especially since the start of the Things presidency. The French shipyard had previously other owners, among them AKER.
I am certainly not a fan of FINCANTIERI, even if they are capable of shipbuilding, but they build vessels for owners, maily CARNIVAL CORP., that are not worth to be named ships - so COSTA (DISASTRIA) CONCORDIA. The sinking was not caused by FINCANTIERI, but its uncapable "capitano".

The French government did not want to accept the fact that Italian investors, in particular FINCANTIERI, took over the majority stake in STX FRANCE, thus making use of their right of pre-emption shortly before the expiry of a corresponding period, thereby nationalizing STX FRANCE. The French state previously held a third of STX FRANCE shares.Actually the takeover deal with FINCANTIERI was already settled. According to this, French investors should hold 45 per cent of the shares in STX FRANCE, 48 per cent would go to FINCANTIERI and a further 7 per cent to Fondazione CR Trieste. The new French President Emmanuel Macron, however, broke with the agreement negotiated under his predecessor Francoise Hollande.

FINCANTIERI was the last remaining bidder for the shipyard to be sold to FINCANTIERI by her financially raised South Korean parent company STX.The nationalization of STX FRANCE is described as temporary in the agency reports. Now FINCANTIERI is forced negotiating again about the takeover conditions. This will put pressure on the Italian government, which is the main owner of FINCANTIERI.The acquisition of two-thirds of the STX FRANCE shares at a price of EUR 79.5 million is intended to protect the strategic interests of France, the economic and finance minister Bruno Le Maire is quoted. The French government intends to implement a contract whereby French and Italian investors each hold half of the shares in STX FRANCE.
According to HANDELBLATT France will for the future hold its 33% shares in STX FRANCE. The French unions demand for final nationalisation of STX FRANCE.

For many, or should I say for "a great many" Ocean Liner Lovers, NORMANDIEis the most beautiful liner ever built. Me, I am amoung those aficionados.
NORMANDIEwas technically decades ahead of time. The vessel got implemented technologies that would have been copied by others, who then claimed to be the first to have. Alternative facts are not a modern days invention of a certain chrétien and his backward oriented entourage ... NORMANDIE´s interior was the peak of ART DECO in France, and was, still is, the peak of chic. Never again any liner, or passenger vessel, except NIEUW AMSTERDAM had been designed exterior and interior that strict in the "guide lines" of the ART DECO (Link in German) movement - as ART DECO is "only" a movement and not a school like BAUHAUS. CUNARD´s 175th anniversary brought the existing three QUEEN´s, the "shadow of a once great fleet" together in the now abandoned port of register, Southampton. It was the first time the vessels have sailed together in daylight from CUNARD's once (2015) port of register, now Hamilton, Bermuda, on the southern coast. Design - How to design a retro-futuristic cruise ship for families with children

To design a retro-futoristic cruise ship for families with children is and was quite a task, but we see it sailing in a fleet introduced by DISNEY CRUISE LINE. Among the `streamlined me-too´ design, typically choosen, in the mass market a soothing eye candy. Especially for those loving the `old lines´.
Actually to most critics the exterior design of the actual DISNEY fleet is named the most elegant, modern looking liner design - it seems to me a bit of  `Steam Punk´. Liners - A comeback for classic ocean liners not as we know them A suggestion

Can the classic ocean liners make a comeback - No, not as we know these ocean liners with several classes and a huge number of passengers on board. But if these classic styled ocean liners will meet the needs and wishes of a well heeled group of guests, then yes!

Cruise - A new MEIN SCHIFF 1 is comming

The new MEIN SCHIFF 1 is comming 2018 to replace the existing MEIN SCHIFF 1 the former CELEBRITY CRUISES vessel GALAXY, later CELEBRITY GALAXY. After a multimillion € refit by transforming normal outside cabins into balcony cabins, and lengthening the up to 262 meter with a new sponson at the stern (beam 32,2m, draught 8,5m).
The existing and the new MEIN SCHIFF 1 are no luxury cruise vessels, but in the mass market a real premium product. The passenger numbers are near to 3,000 and the crew at 1,000, which will be stress for the crew per se.
